Richard R. “Dick” Dier, 82, formerly of Watertown, passed away August 1, 2018, at RiverLedge Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his family.
Dick was born April 24, 1936, in Gouverneur, NY, son of Robert C. and Marjorie Hance Dier. In 1954, he graduated from Gouverneur High School and in 1958 from_SUNY Cortland receiving his bachelors of art degree in physical education. In 1959, he entered the United States Army and served until 1965, when he was honorably discharged. On December 22, 1962, he married Betty Bodenhamer in High Point, NC. Betty died June 7, 2018. Dick was a Physical Education Teacher and Coach with a teaching career spanning 33 years at Watertown High School from 1960-1991. During his career, he coached several sports, including baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, and golf. His long coaching career allowed him to coach all of his children at one time or another.
Dick was a communicant of Holy Family Church, a member of the American Veterans and NYSUT. He enjoyed golfing; especially with Betty, with whom he shared a record of three holes in one, each. He loved to watch sports on television, especially the Syracuse Orangemen, the New York Yankees and the New York Giants.
Surviving are his children, Don (Toni) Dier, Utica, Tom (Bea) Dier, Watertown, Scott Dier, Little River, SC, Sue (Greg) Guimond, Ogdensburg, sister, Diane Frawley, Wilmington, NC, grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Dier, New Hartford, Vincent (Chelsea) Dier, New Hartford, Zachary (Nicolle) Dier, Ashville, NC, Chase (April) Dier, Ashville, NC, Andrew (Darrien) Guimond, US Navy, Port Hueneme, CA, Danelle Guimond, Odgensburg, and great grandchildren, Alesandra, Brayden, Paxton, and Briana Dier, nephew Rob Frawley, Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and niece Karen Babb, New Milford, CT and several cousins.
Calling hours will be Monday, August 6, 2018 from 4-7 pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc., 135 Keyes Ave., Watertown, NY. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 am at Riverside Cemetery in Gouvernuer, NY with Reverend Joseph Morgan officiating.
