Natale “Nate’ G. Carbone, 96, of Watertown, passed away September 22, 2024, at his home under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and with his family by his side.
Nate was born February 6, 1928, in Watertown, son of Joseph and Catherine (D’Augostino) Carbone. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1945. In 1948 he joined the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1948 as a Quarter Master.
It was love at first sight for Nate and on May 14, 1952, he was blessed to marry Rita M. LaLonde at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Reverend Vullings officiating. Mrs. Carbone died February 28, 1982.
Nate was an Insurance Agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for thirty-five years, retiring in 1987. He was a communicant and Lector of St. Anthony’s Church, a member of the Men’s Mt. Carmel Society, Italian American Civic Association, American Legion, Watertown Golf Club and the YMCA. Nate was a volunteer for Hospice of Jefferson County and was in the Red and Black Hall of Fame.
A member of the Greatest Generation, Nate lived on Coffeen Street for 96 years. His pleasures were simple; daily mass, morning coffee with his buddies, a swim at the YMCA, an afternoon round of golf with his friends, and dinner and music with his family. As an avid golfer, he experienced the thrill of three hole in ones. Nate appreciated interesting conversation, telling jokes, recounting stories with family and friends and a great laugh. He was a man of grace and humility- dedicated to his faith, family and friends.
Surviving are his children, Catherine Leon, Franklin, MA, Joseph (Gretchen), Ft. Myers, FL, Michael, Henderson, Steven, Henderson, Mary (John) Shepard, DeWitt, NY, John “Jake” (Karyn), Sackets Harbor, Joanne (Mark) Lavarnway, Watertown, several grandchildren, two great grandsons, several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Carmen and Donald, a sister, Victoria Bova, an infant sister, Josephine, a sister-in-law, Eileen Carbone, and a son-in-law Kenneth Leon, all died before him.
Nate’s family would like to thank Eileen, Ida, Donna, Nila and Hospice of Jefferson County for the care they gave to Nate.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 4-7pm at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be held Friday at 9:15 am at the funeral home followed by a 10 am funeral mass at St. Anthony’s Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
