Michael G. Powers, 80, of Bowers Avenue, passed away surrounded by his family, under the care of Jefferson County Hospice.
Mike was born August 17, 1944 in Ithaca, NY, son of Joseph E. and Jane (Gere) Powers. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in 1961. A proud graduate of St. Bonaventure University, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in business in 1965 before earning a Master of Business Administration from Albany State University.
On October 12, 1974, Mike married Ellen Iurino at St. Patrick’s Church with the Rev. J. Michael Gaffney officiating. Surrounded by close family and friends, Ellen and Mike celebrated their 50th anniversary on October 12, 2024.
A devoted son, Mike worked alongside his father at their family business, Joe Powers Furniture and Appliance, during and after college. In 1981, Mike transitioned to public school administration. He served as the Business Official for the Watertown City School District before moving to the Carthage Central School District. Mike retired from Carthage in 2009 after more than two decades of service as Assistant Superintendent of Business.
Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and especially loved being grandpa to his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife Ellen, a son, Kevin N. (Merideth) Powers, Amherst, NY, a daughter, Colleen M. (Nathaniel) Parker, Chili, NY, a brother, Patrick J. (Dawn) Powers, Penfield, NY, a sister, Nancy P. Goodwin, Watertown, NY, five grandchildren, Jack, Zoe, and Emma Powers, Roman and Kennedy Parker, and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Constance Lister, a brother-in-law, Thomas P. Goodwin, and a niece, Jane Goodwin, died before him.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 10 am at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
