Mary Jane Elizabeth Guthrie, 85, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024 at Traditions at Reagan Park in Avon, IN, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Jane was born on June 10, 1939 in Watertown, NY a daughter of the late James and Mary (Cifra) Coppola. She was a graduate from Watertown High School and beauty school in Syracuse, NY. She later owned her own hair salon in Sackets Harbor, NY.
On April 9, 1959 she married George S. Gutherie in Schenectady, NY. The marriage was later blessed at St Anthony’s Church with Msgr. Anthony Milia officiating. They celebrated 48 years of marriage before George’s passing in 2007.
George retired as a Master Sergeant from The American Air Force and during their marriage, they spent time at various air force bases in New York, Mississippi and Vermont. They later retired in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mary Jane was a member of the Auxiliary of the VFW, Post 1400 and the American Legion, Post 61. She was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and member of the Altar Rosary Society.
She always enjoyed volunteering at the Mount Carmel Feast. Mary Jane was also a member of the Italian American Civic Association Auxiliary where she and George served as Stewards for many years. You could always find them together in the kitchen cooking and serving countless meals and volunteering at the Bravo Fest.
Mary Jane was truly happiest when she was helping others. She always put others especially loving family members before herself.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews among them, her beloved nephew James Michael Coppola whom she treated as her son, his wife Lori and their son, Mary Jane’s great nephew, Kanon Michael Coppola whom she lived with and was cared for.
Kanon was the light of Mary Jane’s life and brought her so much joy, from playing the piano for her and her friends to sharing countless stories about his travel adventures.
Mary Jane is also survived by a sister, Brenda (Coppola) Kirwan of North Andover, MA, formerly of Watertown, NY.
She is predeceased by four brothers, Mariano, Ettore, Joseph R., James F., three sisters, Antoinette Cassler, Sarah Varno and Marsha Coppola.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 11 am at St. Anthony’s Church. Entombment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are with D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. Online condolences may be made to www.dlcalarco.com
