Leonard G. Spaziani, 77, of Chestnut Street, Watertown, passed away peacefully November 8, 2024, surrounded by his family in the comfort and care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
Leonard was born on December 27, 1946, in Watertown, a son of Silverio and Jennie (Root) Spaziani. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in 1965, as the last graduating class of the Academy. He graduated from Jefferson Community College in 1972, and received his bachelor’s degree in Logistics in 1975 from SUNY Oswego. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserve from April of 1966-1972.
On December 29, 1984, he married Anne Burtch at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church.
Leonard was employed with the New York Central Railroad from 1977-1980. He spent many years in various trucking businesses in logistics until he retired. He was employed with Ft Drum Community Homes. He was a security guard at Jefferson Community College and recently at the State Office Building until his recent retirement.
He served on the Watertown City Council, selected to serve an 8-month position, filling in an existing vacancy.
He was a communicant of St Anthony’s Church, volunteering at the Mt. Carmel Feasts through the years. Leonard was a member and past Vice- President of the Italian American Civic Association and was very active with the Bravo Fest.
Leonard was a very good athlete who started playing sports early. He played Pop Warner football, Little League baseball, and played basketball and baseball at Immaculate Heart Academy. Leonard played for the Watertown Royals semi pro baseball team from 1971-1973 as a second basemen.
A friend of Hospice said “Leonard was a proud and vocal supporter of Hospice of Jefferson County, the Hospice Residence, and the expert end-of-life service they provide the community. He realized what a blessing it is to have such a wonderful facility in the City of Watertown. Leonard’s last day of his life were under the care of Hospice home care and at the Hospice residence. It is fitting that he passed in one of the new patient rooms in the addition, surrounded by his loved ones. Leonard was a living example of Making Every Day Matter.”
Surviving besides his wife Anne, are two step sons Greg (Rochelle) Puccia and their daughter, Zoe, Kyle Puccia, all of Los Angeles, CA, two sisters and their husbands, Rosalind and John Morgia, Maryanne and Jon Vespa, a brother, Silverio and Ann Spaziani, Jr., all of Watertown, a brother-in-law, Querino (Augie) Alteri, a brother-in-law and his wife, Jack and Susanne Burtch, Slippery Rock, PA, a sister-in-law and her husband, Mary Lou and Eric Davies, Buffalo, N Y, several nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved and his dog Bella. He was predeceased by his parents, Jennie and Silverio Spaziani, and his sister, Ida Jane Alteri.
Leonard loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending his time gardening, splitting wood and hunting deer at his cousin Frank’s farm in the winter. He always looked forward to taking long walks with his old friends John and Frank.
Calling hours will be Thursday, November 14th from 4-7pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral mass will be held Friday, November 15th at 10 am at St. Anthony’s Church. Entombment will be in Glenwood Mausoleum.
