Kathie M. Strader (AKA: Chickie), 82, of Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully at Samaritan Medical Center surrounded by her family.
She was born on December 04, 1942, in Watertown, NY, to Stephen and Jane (Walrath) Burkard. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1960. On August 19, 1961, she married James D. Strader at Stone Street Presbyterian Church with Reverend Thomas Carlisle Sr. officiating. The two would spend the rest of their years together, laughing, loving and creating good-natured mischief.
Kathie began her working career in the Dietary Department of Mercy Hospital. She then worked as a clerk in the Ladies Department for Boy’s and Men’s Specialty Shop. As a fashionista, Kathie flourished in this position and took pride in dressing and accessorizing the public. Her vibrant personality and warm nature allowed her to make many connections with the patrons. She enjoyed expressing said personality with fun and fashion forward outfits, her love for fashion continued throughout her life. In 1992, she retired from the Jefferson County Clerk office and was able to focus on her passion for her family and the community.
Kathie was an active member at Stone Presbyterian Church and was a pillar of the church community. Kathie advocated for the disenfranchised as she helped to collect donations for those in need and brought joy to those who found themselves lacking. She served as a church Elder, helping to lead the Pastoral Care Committee with dedication and compassion. Kathie worked diligently to model and embody what she thought a Christian woman should be, spreading joy and positivity wherever she went. Her fun and engaging nature encouraged others to follow her lead, and in turn, inspired them to be involved.
Kathie was an active participant in Victim Impact Panels, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). This message was something that she held dear, as her brother, Bob, was killed by a drunk driver. Kathie toured numerous local high schools of Jefferson County, creating mock drunk driving scenarios to deter students from using substances and getting behind the wheel. She was passionate about the cause and shared her story with hundreds of students.
Kathie was active in Little Theatre and Lyric Theatre, her love for all stage productions never wavered. Whether she was watching or performing, she was always excited to enjoy the drama. All Girls Weekends traveling to New York City (and other exciting locations) were regular occurrences in her life. Other interests included reading a good book on the beach, writing, going to the Dude Ranch, and watching Fox News. Kathie adored spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always prioritized their company.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years. Among her survivors are her children, Kelly Strader, Watertown, and Matthew (Tara) Strader, Watertown. She had 4 grandchildren, Sara (John) Telesmanick, Alabama, Adam (Kerstain Rieves) Rouda, Watertown, Samantha (Scott) Freeman, Watertown, and Jacob (Meaghan) Strader, Watertown.
