James D. Strader (AKA: Jim) of Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully at Samaritan Medical Center on April 26th, 2026.
He was born on December 19, 1937, in Watertown, NY, of Gladys and Henry Strader. On August 19, 1961, he married Kathie M. Strader at Stone Street Presbyterian Church with Reverend Thomas Carlisle officiating. Their marriage withstood the test of time; they spent 63 years together faithfully. These were the happiest days of his life which he cherished until his last breath.
Jim began his working career at the Crystal Restaurant in the 50’s and 60’s and then moved to Victory Diner. He then began working with the Jreck’s franchise. Jim was an entrepreneur with a drive to work tirelessly; he played an integral role in the running of Garland Food Distributors for many years. Jim was incredibly proud of the business, and it helped him hone his skills for future endeavors such as being a successful landlord until the time of his passing.
Jim had a love for woodworking and spent many hours in his workshop creating beautiful works for himself, friends and his family to enjoy. He was a man of many skills, including but not limited to plumbing, electrical and gardening. Jim had a love for history, specifically local history and the civil war era. He enjoyed reading and learning about a myriad of topics, he always enjoyed sharing a fun fact. He was a well-meaning prankster and found endless joy in causing a little good-natured mischief.
Jim was a Scout Master for Boys Scouts of America, helping youths to learn new skills and inspiring young boys to be successful men. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent time adventuring, hiking and scaring off the occasional bear when necessary. He loved fishing and spent countless hours sharing the sport with his nephew Robert, and grandchildren.
Other interests included going to the Dude Ranch with his wife and family, attending a Watertown Wolves hockey game, cheering for Aaron Judge on the New York Yankees, and watching Fox News. He was a proud father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Among his survivors are his children, Kelly Strader, Watertown, and Matthew (Tara) Strader, Watertown. NY; 4 grandchildren, Sara (John) Telesmanick, Adam (Kerstain Rieves-Rouda) Rouda, Samantha (Scott) Freeman, and Jacob (Meaghan) Strader. He was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Sophia, Brody, Henry, Paul, Michael, Eleanor, Patrick, and William. His brother-in law Gary (Tracey) Buckard, Portland OR, and two sisters in-law, Linda Burkard, Minnesota, Christine (Don) Dear, Watertown. He had a special friendship with his nephew, Robert Strader, FL. Besides his parents he is predeceased by his siblings, Henry Strader, Clinton Strader, Dick Strader, Burr Strader, Larry Strader and Jane Strader.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. No formal funeral arrangements will be held.
