Edward Demarest Obituary

Edward Thomas Demarest, 97, of Watertown, passed away January 29, 2018, at the Samaritan Keep Home where he has been a resident.

Born in New York, New York, son of Mary & William Demarest. He graduated from Murray Hill Vocational School, briefly worked as a printer for the Lincoln Printing Company before he joined the 258th FA Regiment of the National Guard. Called into duty in 1940 and stationed at Pine Camp, now known as Fort Drum, joined the Army and trained to become a gunner on the B-17 turret.

After the war he married Vera Rosemary Marra of Watertown where they had two children, Patricia Ann (Henderson) who lives in Chaumont, NY with her husband David, and Phillip William, who resides in Fallbrook, CA with his wife Judy.

Retiring from the Army as a Master Sergeant, he went to work for the grocery chain, Loblaws, the couple settled and raised their children in Potsdam, NY, where he retired after a 28 year career. They moved back to Watertown to be closer to family and he worked at the Fort Drum Commissary for a short time.

Edward is also survived by his brothers, The Honorable Harry Demarest (Anita) of Bolton Landing, NY and Joseph (Ann) Masters of Long Island, NY. Grandchildren Kellie (Pete) Maliszewski of New Britain, CT and Jeffrey (Stephanie) Henderson of Windham, NH, and Great grandchildren Haley Elizabeth and Alyssa Nichole Henderson.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Vera in 2000 and sisters Adelaide Danko and Dorothy Senck.

Edward was involved in community organizations as a member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, Potsdam Rescue Squad and he was Past Commander of the American Legion Post 61. He enjoyed time with family and was an avid bowler and golfer.
