Mary A. Mesires

Mary Agnes Mesires passed away under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and surrounded by her family, in her home, on February 22, 2018, at the age of 71.

She was born on March 27, 1946, to Frederick and Agnes Paul Johnson of Sackets Harbor, NY. Mary graduated from Sackets Harbor School District in 1964. She went on to obtain her barber and beautician license after graduation. She worked as a barber in the Arcade Barber and Beauty Shop, starting in 1966. Mary gained notoriety as one of the first female barbers in Watertown. Around 1970, Mary opened her own shop on Franklin Street in Watertown. Mary met and married her husband, Tony, in 1971. They recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on February 5th. Mary went to work at Watertown Appliance and TV in the early 1980's, after having her children. She worked as the bookkeeper for the store and later became the treasurer of the corporation, retiring in 2014.

Mary loved to read, quilt, work on crossword puzzles and spend time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Tony G. Mesires, Cape Vincent; son Nicholas T. (Kristin) Mesires; their children Jack and Naia, of Gorham, Maine and her daughter Maria T. Mesires, Watertown. Mary is also survived by her three sisters; Patricia Dziok, of Virginia, Elizabeth Mooney, of Sackets Harbor, and Teresa Gaffney, of Dexter. In addition, she is also survived by a sister - in-law, Maria G. Kaltsounis, Seattle, WA and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Agnes and Fred, as well as two brothers-in-law, Robert and Nicholas Mesires, and a sister-in-law, Elnora Mesires

Calling hours will be Wednesday, February 28, 2018, from 9-11am at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral service will follow at 11 am with Reverend Michael Gaffney officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in the Mesires family plot.
