Dr. Milton
Farney Ebersol
Dr. Milton Farney Ebersol, 86, Brookside Drive, Watertown, died
at 2:22 a.m. Tuesday in the emergency room at Samaritan Medical
Center.
Dr. Ebersol was a veterinarian for 40 years in Watertown and
was a 50-year member of Watertown Rotary Club.
Born July 8, 1922, in the town of New Bremen, a son of Joseph F.
and Florence L. Farney Ebersol, he grew up on the Ebersol
homestead farm between Beaver Falls and Croghan. He graduated in
1940 from Beaver Falls High School and worked for a time at J.P.
Lewis Co., Beaver Falls. He married Marjorie Joyce Hirschey on
Nov. 2, 1944, at the Boonville Methodist parsonage with the Rev.
Robert U. Holmes officiating.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he enlisted Oct. 11, 1942, in
New York City and received flight training at Colgate
University, Hamilton, and in Hutchinson, Kan. In July 1944, as
an ensign, he was designated as a naval aviator at Corpus
Christi, Texas.
He served with Patrol Bombing Squadron VPB-124, flying PB4Y-2B
Privateers, stationed on Okinawa. He received an Air Medal for
action in aerial flight in the western Pacific in 1945 and was
discharged from active duty April 28, 1947, at Pensacola, Fla.,
as a lieutenant junior grade. After the war, he taught
navigation at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, for a time and
served in the naval reserve until his honorable discharge Aug.
22, 1960. He had attended several reunions of his naval squadron
during the past 25 years. He attended Sampson College, Geneva,
from 1947 to 1949 and the New York State Veterinary College at
Cornell University, Ithaca, from 1949 to 1953, graduating as a
doctor of veterinary medicine. He was a member of Cornell’s Beta
Chapter of Omega Tau Sigma national veterinary society and,
after graduating, worked for a year at Pine Tree Veterinary
Hospital, Augusta, Maine. Dr. and Mrs. Ebersol purchased the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Corwin T. Jewell Sr. on Cemetery Road,
which later became Brookside Drive, in October 1954 and
established Hillspring Veterinary Hospital as a large- and
small-animal practice. He shifted his practice in the early
1960s to small animals and retired in 1994. Mrs. Ebersol, who
assisted her husband in his practice, died Jan. 4, 2004.
Dr. Ebersol had been a member of Watertown Rotary Club since
June 1958. He was a three-time Paul Harris Fellow, had been
active on the club’s Foundation Committee for the past 13 years
and recently was recognized for 49 years of perfect attendance.
He also was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church; a
member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the
Central New York Veterinary Society, the Central New York
Corvair Club and the Corvair Society of America, and a life
member of the Town of Watertown Historical Society. He enjoyed
collecting classic cars, gardening, landscaping and the
outdoors, especially working in the woods.
Surviving are a son, Lee Hirschey Ebersol, and a daughter,
Sue Ebersol DeMar, both of Watertown; a brother, Earl J.,
Austin, Texas; a granddaughter, nieces, nephews and cousins. A
brother, Paul F., died Nov. 22, 2004.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 in the
Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery, Croghan. A memorial service
will be at 2 p.m. that day at Trinity Episcopal Church,
Watertown, followed by a reception in the church’s Great Hall.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with D.L.
Calarco Funeral Home.
Donations may be made to the Rotary Foundation, in care of
Watertown Rotary Club; First Presbyterian Church Radio Ministry;
Trinity Episcopal Church Music Ministry, or Hospice of Jefferson

Joseph A. Pyano
Joseph A. Pyano,
100, Oreland, PA, formerly of Watertown, died August 29, 2008 at
the Central Montgomery Hospital, Lansdale, PA.
Mr. Pyano
was born September 28, 1907 in Watertown a son of Alfonso and
Rosalind Verne Piano. He attended local schools. On October 4,
1930 he married Elsa Pacifici in Brooklyn, NY. Mrs. Pyano died
June 30, 2006. A short time after his wife’s dead he moved to
Oreland, Pa with his daughter. Mr. Pyano was a car inspector for
the New York Central Railroad until his retirement in 1972. He
was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, a member of the
Knights of Columbus and the Northside Improvement League. For
many years he delivered Meals on Wheels.
Surviving
are a daughter Joelle G. Pyano, Oreland, PA, two twin grandsons
and a granddaughter in law, Jason and Grace Kim Pyano, Colmar,
Pa and Joseph Pyano, Norcross, GA, a great grandson, three
nieces and their husbands Karen and Steven Williamson, Josephine
and Al Oddi, both of Watertown and Lilla and Owen Clough,
Henderson and Florida and a nephew Gerard and his wife Nan
Pacifici, Watertown.. Three brothers Anthony Payne, Louis Piano
and Daniel Piano, three sisters Mary Frezzo, Irene Frank and
Angeline Graziano died before him.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 3-7 pm at the D.L.
Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be Friday at
10:15 am at the funeral home with an 11 am funeral mass at St.
Anthony’s Church with Reverend Donald Robinson officiating.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made

Joseph Leone
Joseph
Leone, 88, 1015 Arsenal Street, died Saturday August 30, 2008 at
the Samaritan Medical Center.
Mr. Leone was
born July 15, 1920 in Watertown a son of Faro and Catherine
Gange Leone. He attended local schools. On September 4, 1942 he
entered the United States Army and served in the European
Theater. He was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945. In
1946 he married Jennie DeFranco in Watertown, she died in 1975.
He married Sue DeFranco in later that year. Mr. Leone was a
machine operator for the New York Central Railroad for thirty
five years until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Leone was involved
with the construction of Route 81.
He was a
member of the American Legion Post 61 and a former member of
Watertown Golf Club. He is a communicant of St. Anthony’s
Church. Mr. Leone enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening,
woodworking and carpentry.
Surviving
besides his wife are a son and his wife Frank and Linda Leone,
Adams Center, a daughter and her husband Christine and Scott
Wright, Rochester, six grandchildren, one great grandson, a
brother Peter, Watertown, three sisters Theresa Messina,
Watertown, Mrs. Peter (Vita) Messina, Watertown, Marie Messina,
Florida, several nieces and nephews. A brother Frank and a
sister Angelina DiLeonardo died before him.
There will be no
calling hours. Arrangements are with D.L. Calarco Funeral Home,
Inc. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 10 am at St.
Anthony’s Church with Reverend Donald Robinson officiating.

Douglas M. Nolan, 66, ICF 2 Gaffney Dr.
Watertown, died Wednesday August 20, 2008 at his home. He was a
resident of J.R.C.
Born February 4, 1942 in Astoria, Queens,
NYC a son of James M. Nolan and Rena Roy. He was a resident of
Sunmount from 1972 until 1976 at which time he moved to a J.R.C.
Facility in Watertown
A graveside service is tentatively set for
September 12, 2008 at Sacred Heart Cemetery in South Hampton,

John Joseph
Salotto
John Joseph
Salotto, 86, formerly of 541 Arsenal Street, died Saturday
August 16, 2008 at Samaritan Keep Home.
Mr. Salotto was
born August 17, 1921 in Watertown a son of Joseph and Giacinta
Barile Salotto. He attended Watertown area schools. On October
7, 1940 he enlisted with Company A, 108th Infantry, NY National
Guard. Mr. Salotto trained at Fort McClellen, Alabama. He
qualified as marksmen with an M-1 Rifle and served as a Rifleman
745. He participated in the initial invasion of the Northern
Solomons, Guadalcanal and Philippines Campaigns. Mr. Salotto
was wounded in action on February 5, 1945, in Luzon, Philippine
Islands. He was then transported to Newton D. Baker General
Hospital, West Virginia and subsequently received an honorable
discharge from the Veterans Army Facility in Batavia, NY on
September 11, 1945. While in the Army he received the Asiatic
Pacific Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation
Ribbon with one Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry
Badge and an American Defense Service Ribbon. Mr. Salotto was a
long time summer resident of Point Vivian, Alexandria Bay where
he enjoyed bird watching and studying nature. He was a
communicant of Saint Anthony’s Church
Surviving
is a brother and his wife Michael and Josephine Salotto, Auburn,
NY, and several nieces and nephews to include Francine Peterson,
Phil and Roxanne Pratt, Georgia Root, John, Frederick and
Raymond Lava. A brother Joseph Salotto, Jr. and four sisters
Mary Lava, Madolyn Root, Lena Navarro and Carolyn Card died
before him.
Calling hours

followed by a prayer service with Reverend Donald Robinson
officiating. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery with military

Angela C. Davies
Angela C. Davies, 89, 1010 Washington
Street, formerly of 426 Arsenal Street and Midtown Towers, died
Friday August 15, 2008 at Carthage Area Hospital.
Mrs. Davies was born August 30, 1918 in
Watertown a daughter of Frank and Mary Esposito Pastizzo. She
graduated form Watertown High School. On August 9, 1941 she
married Harry J. Davies at St. Anthony’s Church. Mr. Davies died
in 1969.
Mrs. Davies was a teller for the
National Bank and was employed with Fort Drum in the finance
office until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of the
National Secretaries Association and a volunteer for Mercy
Hospital. Mrs. Davies was a communicant of Holy Family Church
and a former communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. She was a
member of the Legion of Mary at Holy Family Church. Mrs. Davies
was a bowler and an avid reader. She taught and enjoyed
crocheting. She is a member of the American Legion Aux. Post 61
Precious Blood Aux.
Surviving are a son and his wife,
Charles and Kathy Davies, Rochester, a daughter and her husband,
Mary Louise and Patrick Hunt, Black River, a brother and his
wife, Anthony and Carol Pastizzo, Gouverneur, five
grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews,
great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. A
brother Angelo Pastizzo and two sisters Lena Siragusa and Mary
Vittori died previously.
Calling hours will be Sunday from
4-7pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. with a Legion of
Mary service during that time. A prayer service will be held at
9:15 am Monday at the funeral home with a 10 am funeral mass at
St. Anthony’s Church with Reverend Steven Murray officiating.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made

William A.
Nelson
William A. Nelson, 86, a World
War II veteran and retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal
service, died Monday, Aug. 11, at his home at 1124 Franklin
St., where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of
Jefferson County.
Born Jan. 20, 1922, in the home where he died, a son of Allen
and Emma Littlefield Nelson, he was a 1940 graduate of Watertown
High School. Always an athlete, Mr. Nelson was captain of the
WHS varsity basketball team and was city of Watertown doubles
tennis champion along with his best friend the late attorney
Lewis Spicer. He married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary C.
O'Driscoll, on Dec. 6, 1943, in the rectory of Our Lady of the
Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Benoit C. Dostie officiating. Mrs.
Nelson died in 2002. Enlisting in the Army in 1942, he was
selected to attend the Armed Service Training Program for
engineering at Cornell University, Ithaca, but due to the
escalation of World War II, he was sent to the European Theater
of Operations where he served heroically receiving the Combat
Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, U.S. Victory and Good
Conduct Medals. He was also recognized by the Belgian Government
with the allied liberators with "A Ses Leberateurs" Medal. He
was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and remained in a Paris
hospital for three months.
Mr. Nelson retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1993 after
33 years of service as a letter carrier in the city of
Watertown. A life member of the American Legion, he was also a
stamp collector all his life and a member of the City Stamp
Club, meeting regularly at the Watertown Post Office. An avid
bird hunter and trout fisherman all his life, Mr. Nelson was a
long time member in good standing at the Watertown Sportsman's
Club where for a time he was also active in field trial
participation with his German Shorthair Pointers. In 1950, Mr.
Nelson and his father, built a summer cottage on Hardscrabble
Bay where he loved to spend time with his adoring family.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, William A. Jr.,
with whom he resided, and James F. and Terrie, Sackets Harbor; a
daughter, Rosanne Weir LaPlante, and her husband, Jim,
Watertown; a grandson, F. Marshall Weir, and his wife, Sarah;
granddaughters, Jamie, Allie, and Julia Nelson, and
great-grandchildren, Adelaide and George Weir. A brother,
Francis, died before him.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at the
convenience of the family. Arrangements are with D.L. Calarco
Funeral Home, Inc. Donations in William Nelson’s name may be
made to the Volunteer Transportation Center, Inc. 203 N.
Hamilton St., Watertown N.Y. This organization provides
critically needed transportation for the elderly.

Stanley
Jeanne B. Stanley, 80, of 632 S.
Hamilton St., died Friday, Aug. 8, at her home while under the
care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Born Oct. 5, 1927, in Massena, daughter of Paul J. and
Florence M. Andrus Brodeur Jr., she graduated from Watertown
High School in 1945. She was a member of the All State
Orchestra, playing cello, under the direction Leonard Bernstein.
In 1949, she graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor
of science degree in home economics. She married David Stanley
on Sept. 10, 1949, at All Souls Universalist Church with Rev.
Dr. Niles and Rev. Ellsworth Reman, officiating. Mrs. Stanley
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was
instrumental in developing the First Presbyterian Radio Ministry
which has developed into television and internet ministries. In
1997, she was the representative to the General Assembly of the
Northern New York Presbytery. As a volunteer she prepared and
organized dinners for church functions for many years. Mrs.
Stanley was a secretary of the session and played in the Bell
Choir. She was a member of the Newcomers Club, the Red Hat
Society, a former president of the Knickerbocker Parent Teachers
Association, a volunteer for Samaritan Auxiliary and the
Hospital Gift Shop. She was a Girl Scout troop leader and a
district cookie chairman. Mrs. Stanley volunteered for the
Jefferson County Historical Society and was an usher for the
Syracuse Symphony.
Surviving besides her husband are two daughters and their
husbands, Patricia and Eddy Rose, Loudon, N.H., and Susan and
Chester Martin Jr., Frankfort, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Rebecca
King, Frankfort, Andrew Rose, Boston, Mass., Magdalyn Kaufmann,
Utica and Sarah Rose, Loudon, N.H.
Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at
the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service will be
held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at First Presbyterian Church with
Rev. Dr. Brent J. Eelman and Rachael Roberts, pastor of Chaumont

Susan A.
Canale
Susan A. Canale,61, formerly of
272 Bellew Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 7, at Samaritan Medical
Center where she had been a patient since April 2008. Miss
Canale had been a resident of Samaritan Keep Home for the past
year.
Born Aug. 31, 1946, in Watertown, a daughter of Leo P. and
Margaret S. Haas Canale, she graduated from Gouverneur High
School in 1964. In 1968, she received her bachelor of arts
degree in English from Trinity College and later she received a
masters degree in elementary education from Plattsburgh
University. After college she was a teacher in Watertown and
Lake Placid. For thirty three years she was a kindergarten
teacher at West Side Elementary in Gouverneur, retiring in
2002. Miss Canale was a communicant and member of the Altar and
Rosary Society of St. Anthony’s Church and a former communicant
of St. James Church in Gouverneur. She was a member of the New
York State Teachers Association, president of the Teachers
Association in Gouverneur and a member of Delta Kappa Gama – Chi
Chapter. Miss Canale volunteered for the Italian American Civic
Association and for educational organizations. She enjoyed
swimming and reading.
Surviving are her father and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at
St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Donald Robinson officiating.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to the Chaumont Rescue Squad, Chaumont, NY 13622 or to a charity

Betty J. Leary
Betty J. Leary, 89, formerly of
232 Haley St., died Thursday, Aug. 7, at Samaritan Keep Home
where she has been a resident since Feb. 22.
Born March 4, 1919, in Theresa, a daughter of Eugene and
Grace Kelsey Jolly, she graduated from high school in Theresa
in1937. She married James R. Leary on July 16, 1943. He died
June 10, 2004. Mrs. Leary was a secretary for the guidance
office at Watertown High School from 1965 to 1976. She was a
former member of the Samaritan Auxiliary Twig and volunteered
for hospital mail delivery. She also volunteered for Meals on
Wheels and is a member of Emmanuel Congregational Church-UCC.
Surviving are two daughters, Jane Zimmerman and Virginia
‘Ginny’ Harrington, both of Watertown; four grandchildren, two
great-grandchildren; and two nephews, John and Joseph Brehm. A
sister, Ora Brehm, died in 2004.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at
D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Leone Schilling
officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
