Steven L. Petrie

Steven L. Petrie

1979 - 2017

Steven L. Petrie, 37, of Watertown, passed away October 16, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Steven was born October 29, 1979, in Watertown, son of Lawrence and Carol Ransier Petrie. Steven has been a resident of Jefferson Rehabilitation Center and before that an active member of DPAO.

Steven along with his mother Carol were advocates for the DPAO funding that the state of New York’s budget included in the early 1990’s. They met with Governor Mario M. Cuomo in Watertown and Albany several times to explain the importance of funding for respite care and family support services that DPAO offers. On one trip Governor Cuomo was in Watertown to see the damage from the Ice Storm of 1992. During his visit Steven, Carol and several families affiliated with DPAO met him at the airport and asked to meet with him while on that visit. The Governor ended up meeting with the families and touring a DPAO facility in order to understand the need this community had. State Sen. John M. McHugh and Assemblyman H. Robert Nortz were also in attendance, agreeing with the Governor that the families of DPAO needed to retain the funding they were previously receiving. Joe Rich commented that the cut would have ended the services DPAO was able to provide for this community. Steven and Carol spearheaded the revival of a $250,000. cut being reinstated for the DPAO organization and it’s families.

Surviving besides his parents is his sister, Wendy (David) DeCoste, Florida, a niece, Maryrose and a nephew, Austin.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4-7 pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc.  A funeral mass will be held Saturday at 1pm at Holy Family Church with Reverend Steven Murray officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to Disabled Persons Action Organization (DPAO), 617 Davidson St., Watertown, NY 13601.
