1936 - 2015

Sarah C. Varno, 79, of Cadwell Street, passed away December 17, 2015, at her home while under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and her family.

Mrs. Varno was born May 15, 1936, a daughter of James and Mary Chifra Coppola. She graduated from Watertown High School in June of 1954. On August 25, 1957, she married Wilfred T. Varno at St. Anthony’s Church  with Msgr. Dennis Lynch officiating.

Mrs. Varno was a Medical Transcriptionist at the House of the Good Samaritan now Samaritan Medical Center, and Mercy Hospital. She later retired from the North Country Orthopedic Group. She was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of their Altar Rosary Society. Mrs. Varno was a member of the Italian American Club Auxillary and served on the board of Trustees. She volunteered at St. Anthony’s Church spaghetti suppers and worked with her husband at the Pizza booth at the Italian Bravo Festival for many years.

She enjoyed travelling with her husband and had visited Greece, Turkey, Bermuda, Hawaii, Lordes and Italy twice. She loved Caribbean Cruises after their retirement. She loved collecting shells on the beaches of Florida and enjoyed her collection of Angels. Her hobbies were embroidering, cross stitch, puzzles and crossword books. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends.

Surviving besides her husband Wilfred, are a daughter; Anne Catherine Varno and her fiancé, Robert Woollis, Watertown, a son and his wife Wilfred Anthony and Bernadette Varno, Richmond, Wisconsin, her grandchildren, three sisters; Mary Jane Guthrie, Indianapolis, Brenda Kirwan and her husband John, Middleton, MA and Marsha Coppola, Indianapolis, several nieces and nephews. Her parents; Mary and James Coppola, four brothers; Mariano, Ettore, Joseph, James, a sister Antoinette Casler, all died before her.

Calling hours will be Monday from 10 am – 12pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. a prayer service will be held at 12:15 pm with a funeral mass at 1pm at St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Church, 850 Arsenal Street, the Sisters of the Precious Blood Monastery, 400 Pratt Street, of to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street Road, Watertown, NY 13601.
