Robert Lovelace

1944 - 2017

Robert Lovelace person supported, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017, he would have been 73 years old on December 23, 2017.  Robert was a friendly person who warmed the hearts of everyone he came into contact with.  Robert enjoyed listening to the radio and dancing, as well as various recreational activities such as getting his hair cut or going out to eat at one of his favorite locations.  Robert also enjoyed participating in the Guardianship’s annual Holiday party where he would enjoy receiving gifts as well as drinking coffee and eating several cupcakes.  This year, Robert went to Trout Lake with his peers; Robert loved the outdoors and liked to participate in as many outdoor activities as possible.  He also was known to dress up his appearance by wearing hats, ties, watches, rings and bracelets and he had a comb with him at all times to ensure he always looked his best.
Robert was originally from Richmond County (Staten Island).  In 1947, when Robert was about 3 years old he was placed in Letchworth Village.  In1956, he was moved to Willowbrook Institution.  In 1965, Robert transferred to Sunmount Developmental Center in Tupper Lake, NY and finally in 1976 at about 32 years old, Robert came to live and stay here at Jefferson Rehabilitation Center (JRC).  Robert’s last residence was at the State Street IRA, but he also had resided at the Parker Street house in Watertown and the Schell Avenue home in Evans Mills.  Robert attended JRC’s VanDuzee Day Habilitation Program on a full time basis.
Robert had developed many close relationships over the years and it was important to him to maintain these connections.  Robert and his current advocate, Shawn Mead (a JRC employee), had known each other for several years.  Robert also had a special bond with Howard Ganter, JRC’s Executive Director.  Robert liked to attend the Emmanuel Congregational Church on South Hamilton Street in Watertown on a regular basis.  He enjoyed interacting with the congregation, attending meetings and especially meeting new people.  Robert saw all of his support staff from his residence and the DayHab program as his family.

Robert had his own way of completing tasks and he will be missed by all those who had the privilege of being part of his life.
* The service for Robert Lovelace will be tomorrow {12/19/17} at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home on Keyes Ave in Watertown.  Calling hours will be from 2p-3p and the funeral will follow at 3pm at the funeral home.
