Nelson S. “Sam” Leone

1922 - 2016

Nelson S. “Sam” Leone, 93, 849 Emmett Street, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016, while  residing at the Samaritan Keep Home.

Sam was born November 8, 1922 in Watertown, NY;  the son of Joseph and Francisca Dita Leone. He attended school in Watertown and served in the United States Army Air Force from 1943 until 1945. While in the service he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern ribbon, with one bronze star and one silver star, for action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in October 17, 1945, at the rank of Sargent.

On April 28, 1946, he married the former Caroline Bastrella in St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Msgr. Claude Sechi officiating. Mrs. Leone passed in September of this year. They were married for 69 years.

Nelson worked many years for  the New York Central Railroad, after which he was employed by Loblaw’s Super Market. On their closing, he later became Produce Manager for Great American Grocery Store until he retired.

He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, a social member of the VFW and American Legion. He and Caroline were part of a regular Saturday night group at the Legion who enjoyed dancing and socializing with friends. Large vegetable gardens were always a part of Nelson’s life. A particular joy was growing rows and rows of tomatoes and basil to help nephews at the Savory Downtown Restaurant. On retiring he added flowers and bushes to his gardening and began landscaping around his families’ homes. Our family was all so blessed to have a person who could professionally paint all or any rooms we needed done. One year he even helped the teachers paint St. Anthony’s School. His most cherished activity involved attending all his grandson’s sporting events, always bringing bags of candy to share with the fans.

He is survived by his son, Joseph (Toni) Leone, Watertown and their children, Amy (David) Renzi, Watertown and Christopher (Sarah) Leone, Rochester, four grandchildren, Sophia and Estella Renzi, and Jacob and Samuel Leone.

Nelson is predeceased by his parents, brothers, Anthony, Frank, Faro, and sisters Teresa Smith, Rosie Assaro, Minnie Leone and Pauline Leone.

Calling hours will be held 4-7 pm Monday, March 21, 2016, at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:15 am at the funeral home with a 10 am funeral mass at St. Anthony’s Church with Monsignor Robert J. Aucoin officiating. My families hearts are with you and your family at this sad time. The older I get, the more I believe death is not the end, but the beginning. May the family rejoice and reflect on Sam’s life and their own memories of Sam.
