Michael G. Barrows

Michael G. Barrows

1955 - 2016

Michael Barrows passed away unexpectedly while enjoying a sunny day on his land; his family and friends will greatly miss his strength, humor, and generosity.
Mike was born in LaRochelle, France on May 22, 1955 to Phillip and Velma Barrows. He and his family were stationed in many locations, but his fondest memories were of the times he spent fishing and exploring on his grandmother’s farm in Bumpville, Pennsylvania.
Mike began his working career while still in high school, saving his earnings to purchase his own car – a classic 1956 Chevy. He enlisted in the Marines and was stationed in Viet Nam, serving honorably from April 1, 1974 to March 31, 1978. On June 26, 2004, he married Sarah Algie at the Sentinel Band Stand in Sackets Harbor, NY. He then began working as a Maintenance Foreman for the Department of Defense at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, transferring to Fort Drum in 1998, and retiring in 2010.
Although retired, Mike was even busier, volunteering his time to help others, as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children, driving and recruiting for the Disabled American Veteran services, driving for the Volunteer Transportation Services, fundraising for the United Way, and helping both the Junior Golf League and State Park System. He and his wife just completed foster care training to nurture children in crisis. His interests also kept him occupied. Mike was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. If something needed fixing, Mike was always there to the rescue. As a dedicated sports fan, Mike rooted for his teams – the Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and New England Patriots.
Mike’s family was close to his heart – especially his nieces and nephews. Holidays were the highlight of the year, as they were spent with relatives.
Mike was predeceased by his father, Philip, and brother, Greg. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, his mother, Velma, a step daughter, Katherine Kutnick, his sisters, Kathleen Schaeffer and Stephanie Barrows, his sister in law, Sandra, and his brother, Philip, Jr., along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Calling hours will be Saturday, February 6, 2016, from 2-5pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 1:30 pm at the funeral home with Reverend Leon Schilling officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Bumpville Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the United Way of Northern New York, 200 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601. Condolences may be made to www.dlcalarco.com

Sarah:  Words are not adequate for a time like this but we wanted to say thank you for giving Mike the very best years of his life. How I loved to see his eyes light up and that little smile come to his face when you called here. You helped him find his dreams. Our hearts are forever broken that he is gone but our memories of the great times we had with him help shine a light on this lonely path. Please know you are in our prayers.

Mike Barrows was the driving force behind a golf tournament fundraiser last summer for the United Way of NNY. We we were all amazed at his skill and dedication to our cause. HE WANTED NOTHING IN RETURN! He was always trying to find a cause worthy of community support, and then he led by example. We will always consider ourselves fortunate that Mike came into our lives. He will likely not get the public praise he deserves because he sought no public praise. But the charities of the north country were blessed by his presence.

Life it seems is never fair.  When Greg died it devastated our family but you were there to try and help pick up the pieces.  You were steadfast in your support and a rock when at times I was at the end of my rope.  You were a voice on the other end of the phone when I needed a friendly caring voice to steady me. You took it upon yourself to make sure my boys had a role model they could look up to and you showed them how to be men.  They are forever influenced by you being in their lives when their Dad could not be.  And Greg would be grateful for all the ways you took care of his boys and me.  I feel like I am yet again without an anchor.  I still can’t believe you are gone.  My heart has another whole in it that will never be filled.  The only thing I can take comfort in is that you are now with your brother that you have missed for so long and I am sure that the rivers and lakes in heaven will be missing bunches of fish very soon.  I love you Mike and I will never be the same now that you are gone.  Rest in peace Love ya! Sandy

Sarah I can’t begin to know how you must feel.  You and Mike had such a great relationship and I know that he loved you very much.  The few things I have learned is it is not true that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle.  You get what you get and you either handle it or you don’t.  Their were days I didn’t think I would make it though the sadness.  But on those days I would just breathe and take it hour by hour.  Time does not heal all wounds.  You just learn to live with it. It will never be ok that he is gone but it will get better.  He would not want you to be destroyed by his death.  I am grateful that he brought you into our lives you have been such a bright spot for him and for us.  I am a better person having known you.  I love you. Be good to yourself and take care of yourself he would want you too.
Love Sandy
