Mary J. Brown

Mary J. Brown

1924 - 2016

Mary J. Brown, 92, passed away November 28, 2016, at the Samaritan Keep Home where she has been a resident.
Mary was born Mary Jane Smith, at home on Summer St. in Watertown.
Her first job was when she was 15, at Mannie's Ice Cream, which paid 12 1/2 cents per hour.
She graduated from Watertown High School.  Mary met her husband Robert E. Brown at Gene's Inn in Brownville while he was stationed at Pine Camp.  They married six  weeks later and he went off to fight in WWII in 1944.
While Robert was gone Mary worked as a telephone operator at the NY Telephone company.  After the war the family moved from base to base, following Robert in his Army career.  Mary and her two daughters returned to Watertown when Robert was posted in Korea for the war.  When Robert retired from the Army, they settled with their now four daughters on Long Island for two years, but Watertown was always Mary's home town and they moved back.
For many years Mary bowled on a team with her sister Elizabeth Worden.  She worked at the NY Air Brake in the shipping department and retired from there.  Her favorite hobbies were rummage sales, attending church bazaars and doing cross stitch.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Robert E. Brown, four daughters, Karen E. Carpenter (Patrick), Jill E. Butler (Steven), Joy L. Swensen (Stephen), Jan L. Livingston (James) 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren.
Mary’s family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff at the Samaritan Keep Home for the kind compassionate care they gave to her.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. Condolences may be made to www.dlcalarco.com In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Urban Mission Food Pantry or the Jefferson County SPCA

Mary was a big reason I looked forward to going to work everyday. (Back when she was on 2nd floor) Her humor and beauty were inspiring and the closeness that your family brought every day to the Keep home filled the place with a special warmth. She was a wonderful woman, may she rest in paradise. God bless you all
