Margaret J. Rood

Margaret J. Rood

1928 - 2017

Margaret J. Rood, 88, Chaumont NY died Sept 29, 2017 at Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm.

She was born November 5, 1928 in Watertown, NY to Margaret B. Gaskin and William T. Davison. She was pre deceased by her ex-husband Paul M. Rood. Maggie is survived by her four children, Kim Conner, Paul Rood, Laurie Mann, and Tobi Darrah, and their families as well as her twin brother Thomas W. Davison, Syracuse, NY.

She graduated from Syracuse University in 1949 with a degree in interior design. Maggie began her career in advertising in NYC, then in education as a kindergarten teacher at Lyme Central School, director of education at JRC, director of the Thousand Island Craft School & Textile Museum, and as an interior decorator for Raymour & Flanigan.  She strived to advance her careers earning multiple degrees and accreditations. She valued community: friends, co-workers, neighbors, local art and history, the library and book club.

Due to declining health she had moved into Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown for her last few days. Maggie insisted that her room in hospice was furnished with wicker chairs, paintings and prints hung just so, flowers placed all around and her jewelry at her side. Her most beautiful design was her family: Her children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, they were always in her heart.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made to Lyme Free Library, 12165 NYS RT 12 E Chaumont, NY 13622. Arrangements are with D. L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. Condolences may be made at dlcalarco.com

I am pleased to know Peggy had such a full happy life.  I have wondered where she was etc.  The last I saw her was when she was at the Clayton Museum.  We were neighbors in Camillus, for several years,  however our parents were acquittances from way back when, probably during prohibition!!!
  My condolences.

I used to pick up her recycling for the Village of Chaumont, she had the sweetest smile and kindest demeanor.  I thought she was cool as could be.  Sorry to hear of her passing she was a bright light in this often grey world.

So sorry to hear that Maggie passed.  She was a wonderful person.  I knew her through the Lyme Free library, where she was Board President for many years. She was also such a pleasure to see walk in the door of the library, when she retired from the board. Please accept my condolences.

Maggie guided the Lyme Free Library board and staff for many years as president and later as a volunteer. We are all so grateful for her dedication to the library and commitment to our community.  In this sorrowful time, may the love of family and strength from friends comfort you.

Maggie was president of the Lyme Heritage Center for 10 years, and during that time the Center moved from the Lyme Free Library to theCommunity foundation house, to the old bank building finally to the old Grange Hall in Three Mile Bay.Through all of this confusionaand stress Maggie was very professional; a steady hand.

She was a pleasure to be with and to work with.  She was a people person.  She was always ready with that infectious laugh.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

What a multi-talented person Maggie was, as her full career attests.  I knew her through the Chaumont library, where she was the board president, an energetic organizer of fund-raisers, and in 1995 a founding member of the book group.  We will miss Maggie’s laugh, her artistry, and her gentle spirit.  My sincere sympathy to her family.

I will miss Maggie.  I got to know her through the Lyme Library Book Talk group.  I also had the privilege of visiting with her in her charming cottage on Pt. Salubrious. Though I didn’t know her for a long time, I found her engaging and full of interest in people, arts and culture.  O

Tobi and family,

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Your mom will always stand out in my mind as a cosmopolitan woman. I was just starting out in the work world when I met her and she left a lasting impression. She led an impressive life and I’m sure you are all very proud of her. Respectfully, Nancy
