Jerry Vecchio, Jr.

Jerry Vecchio, Jr.

1941 - 2016

Jerry Rocco Vecchio, age 74 of Sackets Harbor, died Friday, March 25, having shortly been in the care of St. Joseph's Hospital of Syracuse.

Born to Nancy (Abbate) and Jerry Vecchio of Watertown in 1941, Jerry grew up as one of the kids of Boon Street, graduated Watertown High School Class of 1959, and counted the many friendships and memories of his youth among his most treasured. A lifelong resident of Watertown, Jerry loved his community and his neighbors, always willing to help a friend- or stranger- in need.

An avid collector, Jerry loved his cars and Corvettes. He was an especially passionate fan of the soon-to-be 2016 NCAA Women's Basketball National Champions UConn Huskies and never- literally, never- missed a game.

He was proud of his Italian heritage and spent many hours in recent years researching family genealogy- with incredible success! His typical determination and dogged interest led him to discover untold chapters in his family history, from his father's childhood in Manfredonia, Italy, to his later journeys to America. He was thrilled to have found an extended family through his efforts and enjoyed the trip of a lifetime in 2012 to his father's hometown and then across Italy, hosted by his nephews and nieces, before welcoming them on visits of their own here to Watertown.

The open road called to Jerry with promise of adventure and there was no place he was happier than behind the wheel with a full tank of gas. Having traveled the country, from coast to coast and back again, Jerry had realized the cowboy dreams of his youth dreams in seeing the Wild West, from the Grand Canyon to Monument Valley. And he never left a place without having made new friends, always ready to strike up a conversation and share a joke. But it was the journeys that ended at the homes of his family and friends, no matter near or far, he enjoyed most of all.

Jerry was a loving husband of 41 years to Marian (Smith) Vecchio. His greatest pride was sharing the joys of his children and grandchildren: Daughter Laura (Vecchio) Lewis, husband Ronnie and family of Montreal, MO; daughter Lisa, wife Jeanne and family of Boston, MA; daughter Alexis (Vecchio) Ganter, husband Kyle and family of Rochester, NY. Predeceased by his parents, brothers Joseph, Bill (Sebastian), and Michael, he is also survived by a sister Anna (Vecchio) Warner and family.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 29, from 4-7pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. There will not be a funeral service and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Condolences may be made to www.dlcalarco.com.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory to Jefferson Rehabilitation Center or the Disabled Persons Action Organization.

So sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. You were wonderful next door neighbors for many years. I know how good Jerry was to my parents. After they passed and it was Marty and I next door I know how much we enjoyed having you there. Even the dogs our Duke and your Molly got along very well. May all the wonderful memories get you through this difficult time. Jerry was a kind, generous and friendly man.

Our prayers go out to his wife, Marian, and his family. Griff

DPAO’s Fundraising Department is so sad and shocked to hear of Jerry’s passing. We just recently talked to him about his Season Seat tickets for Kenny Rogers. Who is going to bother us now about extra tickets to a concert or meet and greets?!? I always told him he drove me nuts with his requests but he always brought us something to show his gratitude! Jerry you will be missed by the ticket girls. Every year we would talk about your fond memories of Trisha Yearwood! Spring and Summer will not be the same for us. Though we do not know the family, please know we are thinking of you.
