1928 - 2016

Frederick S. Haggerty Sr., 87, retired pharmacist and longtime Watertown resident, died Sunday, Jan. 17, at Samaritan Medical Center, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family.
Born July 7, 1928, in Albany, a son of Kenneth G. and Alice S. Haggerty, he attended Albany schools and graduated in 1950 from Albany College of Pharmacy.
He married Roberta Lou “Bobbie” Gilbert on July 15, 1950, at Trinity Methodist Church, Albany. The couple moved to Elmira, where he began his career as a pharmacist. His career took them to Lake Placid, Plattsburgh, and in 1961 to Watertown, where he worked for Kinney Drugs from 1961 until retiring in 1993.
He was a former member of the boards of directors of Watertown Urban Mission and the Kinney Foundation; an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as both a vestryman and churchwarden, and a member of Watertown Elks Lodge.
He was an avid golfer and a member for many years of Watertown Golf Club and enjoyed fishing and hunting. After retiring, he enjoyed many winters in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Most of all, he loved spending time with close friends and family.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Alice Jean and David Boucher and Ruth-Ellen and Steven Van Arnam, all of Watertown; six grandchildren, Amanda Jo Laemmermann Phillips and her husband, Craig Phillips, Frisco, Colo., Drew G. Laemmermann, Lone Pine, Calif., and Maureen M. Laemmermann, Blaire N. Wickwire-Van Arnam, John S. Van Arnam and Riley J. Van Arnam, all of Watertown; several nieces and nephews, and his companion of five years, Ann B. Northrop.
His wife, Bobbie, a daughter, Cathleen A., a son, Frederick S. “Rick” Jr., and a brother, Malcolm, died before him.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Richard Laribee, rector, officiating, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Burial in Brookside Cemetery will be at a later date.
Arrangements are with D.L. Calarco Funeral Home.
Donations may be made to Watertown Urban Mission, 247 Factory St., Watertown, N.Y., or Trinity Episcopal Church, 227 Sherman St., Watertown. Condolences may be made to www.dlcalarco.com

Dear Alice Jean, Ruth Ellen, and Family:

Both your father & mother influenced so many lives: both with larger than life personalities & hearts.

I can hear your father’s raucous laughter, especially after spouting one of his “Haggerty-isms”.

May your hearts lift up in remembrance.

I am sorry to hear of your father’s passing.  On behalf of the Dungey family I send my sincere condolences.  I will always have fond memories of the “good old days” when our parents played cards and enjoyed each others company!  They were great friends!  Love, Kim

My thoughts and prayers are with Fred’s family and close friends. He was my neighbor, and a fellow pharmacist I once worked beside. I loved his friendliness and sense of humor and his unique ability to spontaneously quote from Shakespeare. I just have to smile when I remember My friend Fred.

May Fredrick’s family and friends be comforted by God’s promise to “swallow up death forever, and wipe away every tear from all faces.”(Isaiah 25:8) Remembering too the promise of the Resurrection hope for both the Unrighteous and Righteous. (Acts 24:15)

I am so sorry to hear of Fred’s passing.  I worked with him as an intern when I was in pharmacy school and he was a great teacher.  If there was a calculation to be done, he could figure it out in his head before I could find a calculator.
