Edward B. Blackford IV

1966 - 2013

Edward Breece Blackford IV, 47, of Adams, N.Y., known as “Crusher” to his friends and family, died July 18, 2013. Edward passed away due to injuries sustained from a utility vehicle accident in Jefferson, Ohio.

Edward was born May 16, 1966 in Watertown, N.Y. to Edward B. Blackford III and Patricia Jones Blackford, now of Adams. In 1984, he graduated from Royalton-Hartland High School in Middleport, N.Y. Edward married Janet Manzella in 1986. He was a devoted, loving, and fun family man and father.

Edward was a 24-year veteran of the New York State Department of Corrections, where he was a corrections officer, and a member of the Watertown Elks Club #496. He proudly served as the secretary and road captain of the Warthogs Motorcycle Club, Chapter 4. He enjoyed many hobbies, from hunting and Harleys to camping and corvettes. He especially loved football, and gave generously of his time, coaching his sons’ South Jeff football teams from pop warner to the varsity level.

Edward is survived by his wife and parents, as well as his maternal grandmother Ethel Gunderson, Watertown; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Edward B. Blackford V, North Hollywood, Calif., Patrick T. and Kristina J. Blackford, Buffalo, N.Y.; a sister and her husband; Rae Ann and Robert Thomas, Adams; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. in Watertown. A memorial service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Adams United Methodist Church, with Reverend Bud Masters and Mona Fargo officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life reception will follow at the Adams Fire Hall. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 120 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601. Janet and family, you have my sincere condolences. It is truly a shock to learn of Ed’s passing.

I have such sweet fond memories of Ed, except that time I dropped the barbell on his head!

From reading the posts here one can easily see that Ed was blessed with loving friends and his family, but we all know that it is us that are blessed to have Ed in our lives.

To The Blackford Family:

I am so very sorry for your loss.  I knew Ed at South Jeff when he was a sophomore and I was a senior.  We had French class together.  We got to be good friends that year and continued to keep in contact when he went away to college.  Unfortunately, we lost touch shortly after that.  He was fun and had a great sense of humor.  He was a great guy.  I will remember him always.

Condolences left by other guests:

Janet and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I didn’t really get to know Crusher until just a few years ago. I would see his post on the Warthog bulletin board and on F.B. but I never met him in person until about maybe 3 years ago. I was on Clevelands poker run when I saw him at the bar and I walked up and said Hey Crusher I’m Hook. He turned looked at me yelled “Your Hook!” picked me up and gave me a “Crusher Hug”. My god I couldn’t breathe. Then there was a short stint that he wanted to change my name to “Baby Cakes” when he found out I could bake and decorate cakes. As you know he was a blast to be around. My only regret is that I didn’t get to know him sooner. I considered Ed my friend and couldn’t wait until I got to see him again. Marlene still laughs about the conversation she had with him on the phone after he used,(I’ll be polite) recycled beer fluid to “clean salt dust off of her car headlights”. I remeber the body slam I got after he said ” I told you not to tell.” He later gave her a hug said he was sorry and she just laughed and said it was ok. He will be greatly missed.
Janet you are know and always be a member of the Warthog Family.

To the mighty Ed “Crusher” Blackford your passing is so painful and surreal that it seems as though it is a bad dream that we all await to awaken from! Things will never be the same as you were the light of every event. You welcomed us to your home every August as we were family. Those days are now gone only left to our memories and what memories they are! You were a unique individual that touched so many lives near and abroad from one state to the next in all walks of life, you lived it to the fullest and never looked back. You are now in a place of solitude to wreak havoc among the stars. Your presence will be missed for years to come but your torch will be carried on through the ones that knew you well. Peace be with you Brother WFFW!

Ed,you will be missed by many. That loud stern voice I remember so well the years we worked together in draft at the Prison. You were quite the officer that I wanted on my side. So many stories could be told about our days together. We will keep them to ourselves until we see each other again. Take care my friend. Also, I forgot to say you were a large piller of your community. Your friend Big “T”.

Janet and family,
Words cannot express the sorrow I am feeling. Crusher was one of my closest friend’s/brother’s in the Warthogs. I could always count on his texts or calls as events we were both attending were approaching. I will miss his random middle of the night calls where he spoke cursive and I had no idea what he was trying to say. He is the epitome of what it means to be a Warthog. We had many great times together and we will again my brother. I will always look for your texts, I will always look for you at events, I will always miss you. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Michele Kral and I send Janet and all the family and friends our deepest condolences.

Until just recently I never knew Ed as Crusher…he was always Coach Blackford as many years ago he coached my son on the SJ Pop Warner football team.  He was so much more than a coach to those boys…without even knowing he inspired & guided them on & off the football field, followed up with them throughout life & watched them go from little boys to grown men who all had the upmost respect for him.  As the parent of one of those boys…I would like to say thank you Ed for all u did for my son - you taught him so much and again I’m not talking about just football!  Words can’t express my thanks & gratitude for the positive impact u had on my son’s life.  U will be missed by so many.  R.I.P.

Condolences left by other guests:

One night, a number of years ago, Crusher and I were sitting down enjoying a cold refreshing beverage when the subject of Warthogs nicknames came up, he asked me why my Brothers in Toronto gave me mine… so naturally I asked him where his came from… don’t get me wrong, I had seen Crusher “in action” many times since we first met, but I had always assumed that he got his nickname because once he attained his usual elevated state of excitement that no piece of furniture was safe within about 25 feet of him because eventually it would be “crushed”.... the money both he and Janet must of put out over the years to replace stuff must have been astronomical.

Imagine my surprise when he explained that it wasn’t as I assumed, his nickname didn’t come from all the debris he left in his wake, it was from Looney Tunes and everybody’s favourite wascally wabbit Bugs Bunny.

“Bunny Hugged” was a Warner Brothers release from 1950; it introduced “Crusher” as Bugs Bunny’s competition for the title of world champion wrestler, I remembered watching Looney Tunes as a kid but had trouble picturing who the character was, that is until the real life Crusher mimicked the announcer who introduced the cartoon Crusher into the ring almost identically… then he showed me his infamous tattoo… it all became quite clear… I was hanging out with a guy who thought he was a cartoon character… and that was just fine with me.

Crusher will be missed… guys like him are very few and far between.

If you’re interested, here’s a link to “Bunny Hugged”, but you may have to paste it into your browser. Don’t worry about the ads, you’ll need to click in the TV screen section.

To your entire family, Tom and I were so, so SAD to hear about the dreadful news that no one wants to ever hear.  Tom’s expression as he read this news was of disbelief and sadness as everyone’s must have been, the shock is unreal! Although we are in Florida, we have not stopped thinking, praying, reflecting, etc. for what the family, friends, community must be experiencing as Ed was such a fun, happy go lucky, asset to the community, and like my “Tom”, a “don’t piss me off” type of guy that he will surely be missed!  We would like to say “special” prayers for Janet and the boys as we cannot even begin to imagine what you must be feeling! Again, to the family, please know we are praying for you to manage to get through this very difficult time and remember that Ed will ALWAYS be with all of us!!!!!!
