Dennis G. Whelpley

1956 - 2017

Dennis G. Whelpley, 61, of Sackets Harbor, was called unexpectedly to the Lord on December 20, 2017.

Dennis was born on February 29, 1956 to Robert and Agatha Whelpley in Wellsville, NY.  Dennis was a star theatrical performer in high school who remained an entertainer for his entire life.

After attending Alfred University, he received his J.D. from Albany Law School and then served his country in the office of Judge Advocate General’s Corp, in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and at Ft. Drum. In August of 1978, Dennis married Deborah Peangatelli, who survives. Dennis and Debby have lived on Black River Bay outside Sackets Harbor for almost thirty years. They loved the lake in all seasons with duck hunting, their dogs and beautiful gardens to fill their free time. Dennis was very proud of the historical role his homestead played in the War of 1812 and the artifacts that were discovered there.

Dennis was predeceased by his father, Robert J. Whelpley and a brother David Whelpley. He is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, Deborah, his mother, Agatha Whelpley, brother, Robert (Joan) Whelpley, brother, John (Karen) Whelpley, sister, Janet Whelpley and several nieces and nephews.

I was shocked when I received a text from WHS classmate Nick Gasdik about Dennis’s passing. We shared many laughs and good times in Wellsville. I remember performing with him in “Fiddler on the Roof” he was so ill with the flu he barely made it through dress rehearsal but he toughed it out. Farewell old friend. My condolences to your family.

What is it that I remember when I think of Dennis? I think everyone who knows him very well would agree with me on this. It was his sense of humor, his kindness, his compassion, his love for friends and family and most importantly his loyalty and honesty. That is what I will truly miss about Dennis. He made me laugh when we were going through the hardest time of our lives. He always cheered me up when he knew I just had a bad day. He believed in me no matter what was said and when no one else did. That’s the trademark of Dennis. He could read people well and always wanted to make people happy.

Dennis’ death was sudden. I remember when I heard the news I simply could not believe it. He was too young but as it slowly occurred to me I have realized that Dennis indeed lived his life wonderfully. I will forever be grateful to have known Dennis. I only knew him for a short time, but he was an unforgettable person. All the memories I have shared with him will forever be cherished and remembered. Thoughts and prayers are with his whole family.

Dennis was one in a million.  I met him over 30 years ago when he joined Bond, Schoeneck & King in Watertown, New York.  He made work seem like fun and he worked diligently; always came in early and left late.  He joked, laughed and enjoyed life to the fullest.  He was the life of the party - especially at the Christmas parties.  He will not be forgotten.  Thanks for the wonderful memories.

I was so sorry to read of Dennis’ passing.  I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis and working with him a few years ago on the Sackets Harbor Planning Board and when I was looking for assistance when starting my private practice.  He was a very unique and intelligent individual and gave me some excellent advice. Dennis sure did love our village of Sackets Harbor and all the rich history involved.  Condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.
