1935 - 2017

A Bruce VanBrocklin, 81, of 1107 Harrison St., passed away March 31, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center after being transferred from Samaritan Keep Home.

Bruce was born June 11, 1935 in Watertown, son of Arnold G. and Doris Bartram VanBrocklin. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1954 and received an associate’s degree from Jefferson Community College. He served in the United States Air Force, including duty in France, with a specialty in communications security. He was honorably discharged in 1962.

On July 3, 1965 he married Nena M. Surace in Calcium, NY.

Bruce was a patrolman, agency’s traffic supervisor and bailiff with the City of  Watertown Police Department, retiring in 1993. While working as a policeman he also taught criminal justice at Jefferson Community College for over ten years. In 1976, he was recognized by the Jefferson County Traffic Safety Council and in 1981, he received the police departments’ recognition as the “Officer of the Year”.

Bruce was a member of St. Anthony’s Church and was a member of the Watertown Police Benevolent Association. He operated the BMX Track in LaFargeville, was a greens keeper at Ives Hill Country Club, coached Little League baseball and enjoyed hunting.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Brett (Luanne) VanBrocklin, Watertown, a daughter, Melissa S. VanBrocklin, Atlanta, GA, two brothers H. Jack VanBrocklin, Watertown, Rick (Terry) VanBrocklin, Oswego and eight nieces and nephews: Frank (Gina) Kane, Karen Kane, Victor M. Leon, Nicole Fusilli, Kate Harrienger, John VanBrocklin,  Tim VanBrocklin and Julie Gregg. A sister Tara Bickley died before him.

Calling hours will be Monday from 4-7pm at the DL Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 10:15 am at the funeral home with an 11 am funeral mass at St. Anthony’s Church with Msgr. Robert Aucoin officiating. Burial will be in Sanford Corners Cemetery, Calcium, NY with military honors. Contributions may be made to the Jefferson County SPCA, 25056 Water St., Watertown, NY 13601 or to the Parkinson’s Association, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014. While looking for another, I came across item re. Bruce. First knew him from South Junior & we were in same class of 1954.
Remember him as always sincere and an outstanding person of integrity. Condolences to the family.
